BMW’s immobiliser systems have evolved over three decades, starting with early EWS modules and progressing through CAS, FEM, BDC and modern keyless systems. Each generation introduced stronger encryption, more complex synchronisation and tighter integration with the engine ECU. Understanding these systems is essential for safe key programming, AKL work, cloning, ECU ISN extraction and module repair.

This guide covers every major BMW immobiliser system used from the 1990s to 2025, including EWS, CAS, FEM, BDC, DME, FRM and Keyless BMW. It also includes the MCC Mega Immobiliser Chart for quick reference.

BMW Mega Immobiliser System Chart
System Years Security Level AKL Requirements
EWS2 / EWS3 / EWS4 1995–2005 Low–Medium EEPROM read + key data
CAS1 / CAS2 2004–2007 Medium EEPROM read
CAS3 / CAS3+ 2007–2010 High Full CAS read
CAS3++ 2010–2014 Very High CAS + ECU ISN extraction
FEM 2014–2017 High Module unlock + key data
BDC 2017–2020 Very High BDC unlock + ISN sync
BDC2 / BDC3 2020–2025+ Highest ECU + BDC ISN extraction
DME All years Critical ISN extraction
FRM 2007–2014 Medium EEPROM repair
Keyless BMW 2010–2025+ Very High BDC/FEM unlock + ISN

WS Systems (1995–2005)

EWS modules were BMW’s first immobiliser systems. They used basic transponder authentication and simple ECU synchronisation.

Common failures

  • Lost sync with DME

  • Corrupted EEPROM

  • Worn ignition barrels

  • Old transponder chips failing

MCC services

  • EWS key programming

  • EWS repair

  • EWS cloning

CAS Systems (2004–2014)

CAS introduced encrypted key data, rolling codes and more complex ECU sync.

CAS3++ AKL requires

  • CAS dump

  • ECU ISN extraction

  • Key data generation

MCC services

  • CAS key programming

  • CAS unlock

  • CAS cloning

FEM / BDC Systems (2014–2025+)

FEM

  • High security

  • Requires unlock

  • Controls immobiliser + body functions

BDC

  • Very high security

  • Keyless entry integration

  • Requires ISN sync

BDC2 / BDC3

  • Highest security

  • Mandatory ECU ISN extraction

MCC services

  • FEM/BDC key programming

  • FEM/BDC unlock

  • ECU ISN extraction

DME (Engine ECU)

The DME stores the ISN, which must match the immobiliser module.

Common failures

  • ISN mismatch

  • Corrupted flash

  • Failed tuning attempts

MCC services

  • DME ISN extraction

  • DME cloning

FRM (Footwell Module)

FRM controls lighting and stores VIN + coding.

Common failures

  • Corrupted EEPROM

  • No communication

  • Lighting faults

MCC services

  • FRM repair

Keyless BMW Systems

Modern BMWs use BDC/FEM for keyless entry and start.

Common failures

  • Rolling code mismatch

  • Comfort Access failure

  • BDC lockout

MCC services

  • Keyless BMW repair

Why MCC Is the Safest Choice

MCC provides:

  • Key programming

  • Module unlock

  • Cloning

  • Software repair

  • AKL solutions
