Service Overview
- The metal-sided G-Series key was a big, square, heavy thing. It sits proud in a pocket, digs into your leg when you drive, and the polished side trim scuffs badly once it has shared a pocket with loose change for a couple of years. Plenty of owners carry it loose in a cup holder just to avoid it — which is exactly how keys go missing.
- The newer slimline U-Series key is BMW's answer to that. It is noticeably thinner and lighter, the edges are rounded rather than squared off, and the button pads are raised and tactile so you can lock the car by feel without looking. It drops into a jeans pocket flat instead of standing up, and it survives everyday pocket life far better than the metal-trimmed style.
- Because we are already in the Body Domain Controller adding your spare, switching style costs you nothing in labour — it is just the key itself. Add a slimline U-Series key for £50 on top of the programming, for one key or both. Your original key keeps working exactly as it does now, so there is no risk in trying the newer style.
- Functionally the two are identical: same range, same comfort access behaviour where your car has it, same emergency blade slot, same boot and panic functions. The only thing that changes is how it feels to own. Most customers who upgrade one key come back for the second.
- Every key we supply is programmed to your car's own Body Domain Controller and tested in front of you — lock, unlock, boot release, comfort access if fitted, and engine start. We do not hand over a key that has not started the car.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the slimline U-Series key?
It is BMW's newer, slimmer smart-key housing. Compared with the older metal-sided G-Series fob it is thinner front-to-back, lighter in the hand, rounded at the edges and has raised tactile buttons. It carries the same electronics and works identically on your car.
Will the slimline key work on my car?
On BDC2 and BDC3 G-Series cars, yes. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact key generation your Body Domain Controller expects before you pay anything.
How much is the upgrade?
£50 per key on top of the programming price. Choose it for one key or both at checkout. There is no extra labour charge because the programming work is the same either way.
Does my existing key stop working?
No. Adding a key does not cancel your current keys. You keep everything you have and gain the new one.
Can you do this if I have lost every key?
Not on BDC2 or BDC3 — these systems need one working key present. If every key is gone, message us and we will quote a dealer-partnered recovery route instead.
Do I need the blade cut?
Only if you want the emergency mechanical blade to open the door. It is optional — £15 for one key, £25 for two — and we cut it from your registration or key code.
