Key fob & transponder: Remote buttons plus a chip that answers the car's challenge — the part that has to be married to the vehicle.
Blank keys are not keys
A cut blade opens doors. Starting the engine needs the transponder written into the car's key list.

With no working key we read the immobiliser data out, calculate the key, then write a fresh one in.

Early Mercedes EIS units use infrared key communication and a separate immobiliser control. Keys are written directly to the ignition switch, so the EIS is the only module we normally need. Worn or water-damaged switches are diagnosed before any key work so you are not paying to code a key into a failing module.
