Key Features

  • Full diagnosis of the steering lock circuit — motor, sensors, wiring, CAS/FEM communication and power supply.
  • ELV fault codes cleared, lock unlocked and the system reset so the car cranks and starts again.
  • Coding and adaptation after replacement or reset — no dealer visit needed.
  • Optional plug-in ELV bypass module supplied and fitted on the job for +£50, so the fault cannot return.
  • Advanced fault finding included — we find the cause, not just clear the light.

Service Overview

  • A failed electronic steering lock (ELV / EPS) is one of the most common no-start faults on BMW and MINI. The cluster shows a red steering-lock symbol, you may get a "steering lock defective" message, the column clicks or buzzes, and the car will not crank — even though the battery and key are fine.
  • We diagnose the whole circuit: lock motor and position sensors, wiring and connectors, power supply, and communication with CAS or FEM-BDC. The lock is then released, faults cleared and the system reset and re-coded so the vehicle starts normally again.
  • Pricing starts at £150 and varies with location and fault depth. If the unit is mechanically worn, or you simply never want the fault again, we can supply and fit a plug-in ELV bypass module on the same visit for +£50 — coded to the car and tucked into the loom.
  • Free drop-in at our Wolverhampton workshop, or mobile attendance across the West Midlands and beyond with a postcode-based call-out fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is it?

From £150 depending on location and how deep the fault sits. The optional plug-in ELV bypass module is +£50 including fitting on the same visit.

What is the bypass module for?

It replaces the mechanical steering-lock function electronically so the ELV can never jam or fail again. It is coded to the car, hidden in the loom and stops repeat breakdowns — the usual choice when the original unit is worn or has already failed twice.

What are the symptoms of a failed ELV?

Red steering lock warning on the cluster, "steering lock defective" or "drive-away protection" message, a clicking or buzzing noise from the column, the car refusing to crank, or the steering staying locked after switching off.

Do I need a new ELV motor?

Often not — many units can be reset, freed and re-coded. If the motor or gearbox inside is worn we will tell you on the day and offer either a replacement or the bypass module.

Can you come to me?

Yes. We attend across Wolverhampton, the Black Country and the wider West Midlands with a postcode-based call-out fee, and drop-in at our Wolverhampton workshop is free.

Will the fault come back?

A reset on a healthy unit usually holds. If the ELV is mechanically worn the safest permanent fix is the bypass module — that is why we offer it as a £50 add-on rather than a second call-out.

Not sure your car is compatible?

Send your VIN and we'll confirm compatibility before you order. We cover CAS1, CAS2, CAS3, CAS3+, CAS4/CAS4+, FEM/BDC and BDC2.
