What an auto locksmith actually is
An auto locksmith is a locksmith whose entire trade is vehicles. The building locksmith who fits your front-door cylinder and the auto locksmith who codes a proximity key share a name and almost nothing else: modern car work is 20% mechanical and 80% electronics, security data and software.
The job breaks into four honest categories:
Non-destructive entry, snapped key extraction, decoding wafers or a lock cylinder, cutting blades to code (edge-cut and laser/sidewinder).
Writing transponders, pairing remotes and proximity fobs, adding or deleting keys from the vehicle's key list.
Reading immobiliser data from an EEPROM, MCU or flash memory when the car will not hand over security access through the diagnostic port.
Immobiliser and key-module faults, steering lock (ELV/ESL) failures, damaged ignition barrels, ring antennas and receivers.

Dealers are not the enemy — for a handful of locked-down platforms an online dealer session is genuinely the correct route, and a straight answer about that is part of the job. The difference is that a locksmith exhausts the on-vehicle options first.
How car keys actually work (the bit most articles skip)
Every modern key is doing three separate jobs at once. Understanding which of the three has failed is most of the diagnosis.
The blade. Edge-cut or laser/sidewinder, cut to a code derived from the lock or the VIN. It turns the barrel and opens the door — it does not start the car on its own.
A passive transponder chip in the head of the key, powered by a coil antenna around the ignition or by the start-button aerial. It answers a cryptographic challenge. Wrong answer, no fuel and no crank.
A battery-powered radio transmitter (UK cars are typically in the 433 MHz band) using rolling codes for lock/unlock, plus low-frequency wake-up and ranging for keyless entry.
A short, honest timeline
- Pre-1995Purely mechanical. Cut a blade, drive away. Theft rates reflected it.
- From 1998 (EU)Electronic immobilisers became a requirement on new cars sold in the EU — the reason nearly every key now contains a chip.
- Early 2000sFixed-code and early cryptographic transponders; many could be cloned onto a blank in minutes.
- Late 2000sRolling-code remotes and stronger challenge–response immobilisers; cloning largely replaced by writing a key into the vehicle's key list.
- 2010sKeyless entry / push-button start becomes mainstream, along with encrypted gateways and security access timers that deliberately slow key writing.
- 2020sPhone-as-key using NFC, Bluetooth LE and ultra-wideband ranging; over-the-air key management and, on some brands, dealer-only online authorisation.
OBD, EEPROM, bench and beyond
“Key programming” is not one procedure. It is a decision tree, and the branch a car falls down decides the time, the risk and the price.
The tool talks to the immobiliser through the diagnostic port and asks it to accept a new key. Fastest, least invasive. Blocked on platforms that require a signed dealer session or an anti-scan timer.
Some platforms deliberately impose a waiting period before they will accept a new key — a countermeasure against thieves. Nothing is wrong; the car is enforcing its own rule.
The immobiliser box, BCM, dashboard or key module is removed and its memory chip read directly — in-circuit or desoldered — to recover the security data (often called the ISN, PIN, CS or SKC depending on the brand).
The module is powered on the bench and read via its own bootloader or BDM/JTAG interface. Used when the chip cannot be safely read in the car, and where cloning a donor module is the sane repair.

All-keys-lost, step by step
- 1Identify the vehicle properly
Registration and VIN give the exact build: immobiliser type, key blade profile, transponder family and whether the platform is OBD-programmable or needs the module out.
- 2Pick the access route
OBD first if the platform allows it. If security is locked down, the technician moves to EEPROM or bench reading of the immobiliser, BCM or key module to recover the security data.
- 3Cut the blade to code
For all-keys-lost the mechanical code is derived from the lock or from the VIN, then cut on a code machine — laser (sidewinder) or standard edge-cut depending on the profile.
- 4Write and pair the key
The transponder is written with the correct security data and the remote or proximity function is paired to the receiver so lock, unlock, boot and keyless entry all respond.
- 5Test, then tidy up
Start, crank, remote functions and keyless entry are tested end-to-end, fault memory is cleared, and any lost or stolen keys are deleted from the key list on request.

Relay theft, key cloning and keeping your car
Keyless entry works by the car and the fob talking over short-range radio. Relay attacks extend that conversation: one device near your key at the front of the house, a second next to the car, and the vehicle believes the key is present. It is not a fault in your car so much as a consequence of convenience.
Many keys have a sleep or motion-sensing mode that stops transmitting when stationary. Check the handbook — it is the cheapest fix there is.
A genuine faraday pouch works only if it is closed and undamaged. Test it: if the car still opens with the key inside, the pouch is finished.
A visible steering or pedal lock costs a thief time and attention, which is the one thing they will not spend.
A hidden immobiliser that needs a PIN sequence on existing buttons defeats relay and key-cloning attacks because the stolen credential is not enough.

How to choose a legitimate auto locksmith
Locksmithing is not a licensed trade in the UK; anyone can print a card. These checks separate a workshop from a call-centre that sells your job on.
Five myths, corrected
▸“Only the dealer can make a key for my car.”
True for a small number of locked-down platforms and false for most of the market. The honest test is the VIN, not the badge.
▸“A cheap cloned key is the same thing.”
A clone copies one existing key's identity. It can work brilliantly — until the day it doesn't, and because it is a copy rather than a registered key the car may not recognise it as separate. For a genuine spare, a properly written key is the better buy.
▸“Programming a key wipes my radio / seat memory.”
Key writing touches the immobiliser key list, not comfort settings. Battery disconnection during module removal can reset clocks and radio codes — a good locksmith warns you first.
▸“If the car won't start, the key is dead.”
Often it's the ring antenna, a flat 12V, a failed steering lock or a key module fault. A locksmith who diagnoses before selling you a key is the one to keep.
▸“Keys can be programmed from the registration alone.”
The reg is a starting point for identifying the build. Actual security data comes from the vehicle or its modules — which is exactly why proof of ownership is non-negotiable.

Yes. All-keys-lost is standard auto locksmith work. Depending on the platform the technician either decodes the door lock or ignition to cut a blade to code, or reads the immobiliser data (from the immobiliser box, BCM, ECU or key module) to recover the security data needed to write a new key.
▸How long does car key programming take?
A spare key on a mainstream car is usually 20–45 minutes on-site. All-keys-lost is typically 1–3 hours because the blade has to be cut to code and the immobiliser data recovered. Some encrypted platforms require a timed security access window that the vehicle itself enforces, which can add anything from 15 minutes to several hours.
▸What proof of ownership do I need?
Expect to show photo ID plus proof you are entitled to the vehicle — usually the V5C logbook, or insurance, finance or lease documents in your name at the address. A locksmith who does not ask for proof of ownership is a red flag, not a convenience.
▸Does programming a new key delete my old keys?
It depends on the system and on what you ask for. Many platforms allow a key to be added without touching the existing ones; others rewrite the whole key list, which erases lost keys. If a key was stolen, ask specifically for the old keys to be deleted so they can no longer start the car.
